Why this route
This is the rare cross-border train that still feels like crossing a border. The Celta runs up the Portuguese Minho coast through Viana do Castelo, reaches the Minho river at Valença under its star-shaped fortress, crosses into Galicia and finishes at Vigo-Guixar above the harbour. It is worked by a Renfe 592-class diesel unit hired by CP, so the train itself is unglamorous (this is a service journey, not a cruise train) but it is the only direct rail link between northern Portugal and Galicia and it costs a fraction of the flight. Two departures each way per day means the timetable dictates the trip: take the 08:10 from Porto for a day in Vigo, or the evening train if you are staying. Seat reservation is mandatory and both CP and Renfe sell tickets. Remember the hour's time difference when you read the arrival times.

The Alfa Pendular is CP's tilting long-distance service, introduced in 1999 with Fiat Ferroviaria-built series 4000 sets rated at 220 km/h, running from Lisbon Santa Apolónia along the Linha do Norte to Porto Campanhã and on to Braga. CP's own fare table for the Lisbon–Braga relation took effect on 1 January 2026. Seats are reserved in Conforto and Turística classes and there is a café-bar car.

The Comboio Histórico do Vouga is CP's summer heritage working on the Linha do Vouga, the only narrow-gauge line still carrying passengers in Portugal. Early-twentieth-century wooden carriages are hauled from Aveiro up the valley through Sernada do Vouga to Macinhata do Vouga, where the national railway museum keeps its Vouga collection, with a cultural stop at Águeda on the return. CP ran the 2026 edition on nine Saturdays between 4 July and 29 August.
