TWILIGHT EXPRESS MIZUKAZE is JR West's ten-car KiHa 87-series cruise train. The San'in course is a one-way, one-night, two-day itinerary from Kyoto to Shimonoseki along the San'in main line, leaving Kyoto late morning, stopping overnight at Kinosaki-Onsen and running the Sea of Japan coast through Susa and Higashi-Hagi to arrive at Shimonoseki in the late afternoon of day two.

The occasion

Why take this journey

The San'in coast is the part of Honshu the Shinkansen never reached, and Mizukaze exists to spend two days on it. The train is a hybrid diesel built around observation cars at both ends, a lounge and a dining car, with suites that occupy a full car width; JR West runs it as a cruise, with excursions ashore built into the schedule rather than bolted on. Day one runs out of Kyoto across the northern Kansai hills to Kinosaki-Onsen, a hot-spring town where the train lies over for the night. Day two is the long coastal run west past Hagi's castle town and the Sea of Japan cliffs into Shimonoseki at the tip of Honshu. JR West also runs a two-night round trip from Kyoto combining the San'yō and San'in sides. Booking is not a website transaction: reservations go through the dedicated Nippon Travel Agency tour desk, which is closed on Wednesdays, Sundays and holidays.
