Why this route
The Kii peninsula is the large piece of Japan that most itineraries skip, and this is the train that opens it: hot spring beaches at Shirahama, the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage routes inland, and whale-watching further south. South of Wakayama the line runs close enough to the sea that the water is the view from one side of the train for long stretches.

The Tokaido Shinkansen links Tokyo and Shin-Osaka in 2 hours 21 minutes by the fastest Nozomi service, running at up to 285 km/h along the corridor that carries most of Japan's intercity traffic. It was the world's first high-speed railway when it opened in 1964, and it remains an ordinary way to travel rather than a special excursion: trains leave every few minutes, the ride is quiet and level, and the whole journey is timetabled to the minute.

Since the Hokuriku Shinkansen was extended to Tsuruga in March 2024, the Thunderbird limited express runs between Osaka and Tsuruga rather than through to Kanazawa. It connects with Shinkansen services across the platform at Tsuruga, and takes roughly 80 minutes from Osaka via Kyoto.

The Sunrise Izumo is the other half of Japan's surviving overnight service, running from Tokyo to Izumoshi on the Sea of Japan coast. It travels coupled to the Sunrise Seto to Okayama, then turns north-west across the Chugoku mountains.
