This is a preserved railway run for its own sake, so the journey deliberately feels older and slower than modern rail. At a few hours between Mokra Gora and Šargan Vitasi (about 16 km), it is long enough to feel like a journey and short enough to watch the whole of it without losing concentration. The Røros Line is SJ Norge's inland route between Hamar and Trondheim, running about six hours up the Østerdalen valley through Elverum, Rena, Koppang, Alvdal and Tynset to the old copper-mining town of Røros, then down the Gauldal to join the Dovre Line at Støren. It is a year-round scheduled regional service rather than a seasonal tourist train.

Tren de Sóller: Palma to Sóller
The Tren de Sóller is a narrow-gauge electric railway opened in 1912, running about 27 kilometres from Palma's Plaça d'Espanya through Bunyola and thirteen tunnels under the Serra de Tramuntana to the citrus town of Sóller, in around an hour. A connecting vintage tram, opened in 1913, carries passengers a further five kilometres down to Port de Sóller.

Comboio Histórico do Vouga: Aveiro to Macinhata do Vouga
The Comboio Histórico do Vouga is CP's summer heritage working on the Linha do Vouga, the only narrow-gauge line still carrying passengers in Portugal. Early-twentieth-century wooden carriages are hauled from Aveiro up the valley through Sernada do Vouga to Macinhata do Vouga, where the national railway museum keeps its Vouga collection, with a cultural stop at Águeda on the return. CP ran the 2026 edition on nine Saturdays between 4 July and 29 August.

Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad
The Durango & Silverton runs 45.4 miles of three-foot narrow gauge between Durango and Silverton in southwest Colorado, on rails first laid in 1882 and worked by coal-fired steam locomotives ever since. The summer run to Silverton takes around three and a half hours each way; in winter trains turn short at Cascade, 26 miles out. The line is a National Historic Landmark.
