Why this railway matters
This is the quieter of the two rail routes between eastern Norway and Trondheim, and the more distinctive one: hour after hour of pine forest and river along the Glomma, then the bare high country around Røros, where the timbered town and its smelting heritage are on the UNESCO list and worth breaking the journey for.

The Ofoten Line climbs from the ice-free harbour at Narvik in Norway over the border at Riksgränsen (the highest station on the route) and runs past Abisko and the Torneträsk lake to Kiruna in Swedish Lapland. It was built at the end of the nineteenth century to carry iron ore to the sea and still does, alongside the SJ and Vy passenger trains that form part of the long Narvik–Luleå–Stockholm service.
