Rørosbanen: Hamar to Trondheim via Røros

The Røros Line is SJ Norge's inland route between Hamar and Trondheim, running about six hours up the Østerdalen valley through Elverum, Rena, Koppang, Alvdal and Tynset to the old copper-mining town of Røros, then down the Gauldal to join the Dovre Line at Støren. It is a year-round scheduled regional service rather than a seasonal tourist train.

From the record

Why this railway matters

This is the quieter of the two rail routes between eastern Norway and Trondheim, and the more distinctive one: hour after hour of pine forest and river along the Glomma, then the bare high country around Røros, where the timbered town and its smelting heritage are on the UNESCO list and worth breaking the journey for. Trains are ordinary regional services, so you can travel the whole line or use it as a spine for stops at Tynset or Røros.
