Östra Södermanlands Järnväg runs 600 mm narrow-gauge steam trains from Mariefred via Läggesta to Taxinge-Näsby, an 11.2 km museum line the society has operated since 1965. Mariefred to Taxinge-Näsby takes about an hour one way and around two hours as a round trip; the season runs from May to mid-September, with weekends plus additional summer weekdays.

Why this railway matters

Six hundred millimetres between the rails is the narrowest gauge ever used in Sweden for public passenger and goods traffic, and ÖSlJ has kept a working railway at that scale rather than a static collection. Trains leave from Mariefred, a lakeside town below Gripsholm Castle, reverse at Läggesta where the museum line meets the main line from Stockholm, and continue to Taxinge-Näsby. The carriages are small, the vestibules are open, and the locomotives are hand-fired, so the fifteen minutes to Läggesta feel longer than they are in the best way. Because Läggesta is on the Stockholm commuter network, the whole thing works as a day out from the city without a car. The society is volunteer-run: trains run to a printed traffic calendar between the start of May and mid-September rather than daily year-round.
