Why this railway matters
This is the last working fragment of the Kingston Branch, and the operator has kept it honest: coal, water, a hand-fired Ab-class Pacific and carriages that are a century old, running the short distance between Kingston and Fairlight through Southland tussock. The whole thing takes an hour and a half or so, which makes it a realistic stop rather than a day's commitment if you are driving between Queenstown and Te Anau.
