The Coastal Pacific runs from Christchurch to Picton in about 5 hours 40 minutes, crossing the Canterbury Plains before spending long stretches beside the Pacific Ocean around Kaikōura and continuing through Marlborough to Picton.
Christchurch → Picton
Scenic
Why this route
Take this journey for the unusual closeness of sea and mountains.
From the train
The railway is forced onto the edge of the Kaikōura coast, passing beaches, cliffs, tunnels and marine-life habitat before the landscape opens into Lake Grassmere and Marlborough vineyards.
Across the map
The open-air viewing carriage makes the coast itself feel like the centre of the experience rather than a backdrop.
Northbound from Christchurch, the Coastal Pacific crosses the Canterbury Plains through Rangiora before reaching Kaikōura, where the railway is pressed between the Pacific Ocean and the Seaward Kaikōura mountains. North of Kaikōura it runs beside beaches and through tunnelled coastal cliffs, passes Lake Grassmere and Marlborough wine country, then reaches Blenheim and Picton.

The route does most of the work here, it is a journey taken for what passes the window rather than for the destination. At a few hours between Christchurch and Picton, it is long enough to feel like a journey and short enough to watch the whole of it without losing concentration. Height is the story in the middle of this one, the line keeps gaining and losing it, and the ground below rearranges itself each time. The middle of the route, through Rangiora and Kaikōura, is where the journey stops feeling like a departure and starts feeling like a place of its own.

Dunedin Railways runs The Taieri Gorge from Dunedin Railway Station up the Taieri Gorge to Pukerangi and back, a five-hour return trip published as departing Thursday to Monday at 09:30. The operator describes it as travelling in classic 1930s carriages, with a scheduled stop to walk part of the line at Deep Stream Bridge. It is the surviving passenger use of the old Otago Central branch, a line cut into rock above the Taieri River rather than laid along easy ground.
