Northbound from Christchurch, the Coastal Pacific crosses the Canterbury Plains through Rangiora before reaching Kaikōura, where the railway is pressed between the Pacific Ocean and the Seaward Kaikōura mountains. North of Kaikōura it runs beside beaches and through tunnelled coastal cliffs, passes Lake Grassmere and Marlborough wine country, then reaches Blenheim and Picton.

At a few hours between Christchurch and Picton, it is long enough to feel like a journey and short enough to watch the whole of it without losing concentration.
