Why this railway matters

Dunedin Railways runs The Taieri Gorge from Dunedin Railway Station up the Taieri Gorge to Pukerangi and back, a five-hour return trip published as departing Thursday to Monday at 09:30. The operator describes it as travelling in classic 1930s carriages, with a scheduled stop to walk part of the line at Deep Stream Bridge. It is the surviving passenger use of the old Otago Central branch, a line cut into rock above the Taieri River rather than laid along easy ground.
