Scenic
Why this route
Take this journey for the full east-to-west landscape transformation in a single ride.
From the train
The open plains around Christchurch give way to engineered gorges, viaducts and high mountain country around Arthur’s Pass, before the train emerges into wetter green valleys and Lake Brunner country on the approach to Greymouth.
Across the map
An open-air viewing carriage makes the mountain section especially distinctive.
The TranzAlpine leaves Christchurch across the Canterbury Plains, reaches Springfield and then follows the Waimakariri River into the Southern Alps. Around Arthur’s Pass the route reaches its most alpine character before entering the 8.5 km Otira Tunnel and descending toward Lake Brunner, Moana and Greymouth on the West Coast.

This is a daytime scenic service rather than a sleeper, so the ride reads more like moving through a viewpoint than getting from A to B. At a few hours between Christchurch and Greymouth, it is long enough to feel like a journey and short enough to watch the whole of it without losing concentration. Height is the story in the middle of this one, the line keeps gaining and losing it, and the ground below rearranges itself each time. The middle of the route, through Rolleston and Springfield, is where the journey stops feeling like a departure and starts feeling like a place of its own.

Where to sit
Best overall: right side travelling Christchurch → Greymouth
Travelling Christchurch → Greymouth the right-hand side is generally reckoned the better side, though the difference is not dramatic and seats are allocated by the train manager rather than chosen when you book. The open-air viewing carriage is open to everyone, so either side works.
Travelling Greymouth → Christchurch
Left side
Returning Greymouth → Christchurch the left-hand side is the equivalent choice. Seating is still assigned on the day, and the open-air viewing carriage gives both sides of the train.

Dunedin Railways runs The Taieri Gorge from Dunedin Railway Station up the Taieri Gorge to Pukerangi and back, a five-hour return trip published as departing Thursday to Monday at 09:30. The operator describes it as travelling in classic 1930s carriages, with a scheduled stop to walk part of the line at Deep Stream Bridge. It is the surviving passenger use of the old Otago Central branch, a line cut into rock above the Taieri River rather than laid along easy ground.
