Glenbrook Vintage Railway is a volunteer-run heritage line south of Auckland, working preserved steam and vintage diesel trains over part of the former Waiuku branch between Glenbrook station and Waiuku. The society gives a return trip of about seventy minutes, with several departures on each running day. Operation is on selected weekends and public holidays rather than daily, with a winter maintenance closure.

The Weka Pass Railway is a volunteer-run heritage line in North Canterbury, working 12.8 kilometres of the former Waiau branch between Glenmark station at Waipara and Waikari with preserved steam and diesel-electric locomotives. Public trains run on selected Sundays and public holidays, typically as a round trip of around two hours. It is an excursion railway rather than a scheduled transport service.

The Kingston Flyer runs from Kingston at the southern tip of Lake Wakatipu to Fairlight and back, a 14 km return trip behind restored Ab-class steam locomotive Ab795 with wooden heritage carriages. The operator publishes public tours on Sundays from October to May and closes over winter, so this is a seasonal service rather than a daily one.
