Al Boraq is the first high-speed railway on the African continent, opened in November 2018 and running from Tanger Ville down the Atlantic coast to Casablanca in about two hours ten minutes. Trains are Alstom-built double-deck sets derived from the TGV family, and they call at Kenitra and both of Rabat's main stations on the way. It is an everyday intercity service rather than an excursion: seats are assigned, the ride is level and quiet, and the journey replaces what used to be a long half-day on the classic line.

Why this connection
This is the fastest way to cross the top of Morocco, and it is the only place in Africa where you can do it at high speed. Tangier sits at the mouth of the Mediterranean, Rabat is the administrative capital, and Casablanca is the commercial one, so a single ticket joins three quite different Moroccan cities in the time an afternoon takes. The line runs close to the coast for much of the way north of Kenitra, and the contrast between the new railway and the older network alongside it is part of the interest. Take it as transport that happens to be a milestone, not as a scenic set piece.

The Madrid–Seville AVE was Spain's first high-speed line, opened for the 1992 Expo, and it still runs from Madrid Puerta de Atocha to Sevilla Santa Justa in about two and a half hours, with calls at Ciudad Real, Puertollano and Córdoba. Every seat is reserved. Renfe now runs its low-cost Avlo service on the same infrastructure alongside the full-service AVE.

The ICE Sprinter joins Berlin Hauptbahnhof and München Hauptbahnhof with only a handful of stops, using the new-build line through the Thuringian Forest that opened in December 2017. Deutsche Bahn markets the service as taking under four hours city centre to city centre, running at up to 300 km/h on the new sections, with intermediate calls at Erfurt and Nuremberg.

The Komachi runs from Tokyo to Akita as a mini-shinkansen: coupled to a Hayabusa on the Tohoku Shinkansen as far as Morioka, then continuing alone over gauge-converted conventional track through Tazawako and Kakunodate to Akita on the Sea of Japan coast. The run takes around three and a half hours, and the red E6 series sets are among the most distinctive trains on the JR East network.

The Chengdu–Kunming high-speed corridor runs south-west from the Sichuan basin through the mountains of Liangshan to Kunming in Yunnan, calling at Xichang. It parallels the original Chengdu–Kunming railway, one of the hardest lines ever built in China.
