Chengdu to Kunming High-Speed Railway

The Chengdu–Kunming high-speed corridor runs south-west from the Sichuan basin through the mountains of Liangshan to Kunming in Yunnan, calling at Xichang. It parallels the original Chengdu–Kunming railway, one of the hardest lines ever built in China.

Why this connection

Why this route matters

The old Chengdu–Kunming line, finished in 1970, spends much of its length on bridges and in tunnels and is still cited as a feat of construction; the new high-speed route does the same terrain in a fraction of the time. The country in between (high valleys, the Yi communities around Xichang, the descent onto the Yunnan plateau) is some of the least-visited landscape in China from a mainline train.

The train in service

What the speed feels like aboard

Only confirmed onboard details and photographs tied to this service appear here. Unrecorded facilities remain unknown.

Speed is the defining quality here: distances that read as long on paper collapse into a short, businesslike ride. The long run between Chengdu and Kunming (about 915 km) gives the scenery time to shift gradually, and the day settles into its own rhythm of stops and open stretches. The middle of the route, through Xichang West Railway Station, is where the journey stops feeling like a departure and starts feeling like a place of its own. There are few intermediate calls, so the run feels continuous once it is underway.
