The Komachi runs from Tokyo to Akita as a mini-shinkansen: coupled to a Hayabusa on the Tohoku Shinkansen as far as Morioka, then continuing alone over gauge-converted conventional track through Tazawako and Kakunodate to Akita on the Sea of Japan coast. The run takes around three and a half hours, and the red E6 series sets are among the most distinctive trains on the JR East network.

Why this connection
The interest is in the split at Morioka: the train that has been doing 320 km/h in a twelve-car formation uncouples and carries on alone at ordinary line speed, winding through the mountains of Akita on track that used to be a rural railway. Kakunodate, with its preserved samurai district, and Lake Tazawa are both on the line, so it works as a route with stops rather than a straight run. Come in late April or early May and the cherry trees at Kakunodate are the reason people book.

The Tsubasa was Japan's first mini-shinkansen when it opened in 1992, running shinkansen trainsets onto a gauge-converted conventional line beyond Fukushima and reaching Shinjo after a 1999 extension. Trains leave Tokyo coupled to a Tohoku Shinkansen service, divide at Fukushima, and then climb over the Ou main line through Yonezawa to Yamagata and Shinjo. The current E8 series sets entered service on the route recently.
