Zillertaler Dampfzug: Jenbach to Mayrhofen

The Zillertaler Dampfzug is a heritage steam service on the 760 millimetre Zillertalbahn, running the full 31.7 kilometres from Jenbach to Mayrhofen behind vintage locomotives with veranda-ended coaches. It is a separate product from the frequent daily diesel service on the same line, operating in 2026 only from 2 June to 24 September on Tuesdays to Thursdays as trains D211 and D212.

From the record

Why this railway matters

Riding the whole Zillertal behind steam is a different proposition from taking the local railcar: one working up the valley in the morning, one back in the afternoon, at a pace that lets the Zillertal Alps come into view slowly. The open veranda ends of the historic coaches are the place to be. Because it runs only three days a week in summer, plan the date first and build the rest of the day around it.
