The Qinling mountains are the physical divide between northern and southern China (different climate, food and language on either side) and crossing them by rail used to be an undertaking. This line goes through them at speed, in a near-continuous sequence of tunnels and high viaducts, and the short daylight sections between them are among the more spectacular glimpses on the Chinese network. Sichuan begins abruptly at the far end.

The Chengdu–Chongqing high-speed railway runs 308 km across the Sichuan basin, with 11 stations including Ziyang North, Neijiang North and Yongchuan East. A speed increase to 350 km/h in December 2020 brought the two cities within about an hour of each other, with services running from Chengdu East to Chongqing Shapingba.

The Beijing–Guangzhou high-speed railway links the capital with the Pearl River Delta by way of Shijiazhuang, Zhengzhou, Wuhan and Changsha. Since June 2024 Fuxing trainsets have operated at 350 km/h across the entire line, after the Wuhan–Guangzhou section was brought up to the same standard as the northern half.
