The appeal here is the survival of an older way of travelling: short distances covered slowly, with the railway on display as much as the scenery. It is a short hop between Lleida and La Pobla de Segur, so the interest is concentrated rather than spread out, there is little dead time either side of the best stretches. Passing Balaguer railway station gives the journey its midpoint, and the character either side of it is noticeably different. With only a handful of calls, the journey holds its momentum from end to end.

The Cremallera de Montserrat is a five-kilometre Abt-system rack railway run by Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya, climbing roughly 550 metres from Monistrol de Montserrat, via Monistrol Vila, to the Montserrat monastery in about fifteen minutes. The Cremallera de Núria is a 12.5 kilometre metre-gauge Abt rack railway opened in 1931 and run by Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya, climbing from Ribes-Enllaç in the Ripollès through Ribes-Vila and Queralbs to the high valley of Núria at 1,964 metres. It gains over a thousand metres in about forty minutes and runs daily through the year.
