Cremallera de Montserrat: Monistrol to the monastery

The Cremallera de Montserrat is a five-kilometre Abt-system rack railway run by Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya, climbing roughly 550 metres from Monistrol de Montserrat, via Monistrol Vila, to the Montserrat monastery in about fifteen minutes. The original line opened in 1892 and closed in 1957; the present electrified railway reopened on the alignment in 2003.

From the record

Why this railway matters

It is the only railway that delivers you into the monastery precinct itself, and the fifteen minutes it takes are spent on a genuine rack climb below the serrated conglomerate pinnacles that give Montserrat its name. Coming from Barcelona you can travel the whole way by rail on a combined ticket, changing from the FGC line at Monistrol de Montserrat, which makes it one of the easiest mountain arrivals in Europe.
