Why this connection

The city-to-city railway

This is the line that takes you out of the Tokyo megalopolis and into northern Japan in one sitting.

In motion

The train behind the timetable

The country changes as you go: dense suburbs give way to the rice plains around Sendai, then to the wooded hills and long winters of Tohoku, a region most visitors never reach.

The corridor

The route across the map

Sendai and Morioka both sit on the route, and at Shin-Aomori the network keeps going under the sea to Hokkaido, so the journey can be the first leg of something much longer.

North from Tokyo via Omiya, across the plains to Sendai, on through Morioka and the hills of northern Tohoku to Shin-Aomori, where the Hokkaido Shinkansen continues through the Seikan Tunnel.

On board

Speed is the defining quality here: distances that read as long on paper collapse into a short, businesslike ride. At a few hours between Tokyo and Aomori, it is long enough to feel like a journey and short enough to watch the whole of it without losing concentration. The middle of the route, through Omiya Station and Sendai Station, is where the journey stops feeling like a departure and starts feeling like a place of its own.

Good for

Good fit for

  • Solo travellers

    Especially good

Frequent departures and assigned seating make solo travel straightforward, with no need to plan around a single daily train.

  • First-time rail travellers

    Especially good

A frequent, clearly signed, reservable service between major cities; one of the easiest ways to make a first long-distance journey in the country.

  • Rail enthusiasts

    Especially good

A working high-speed railway running at its designed speed on purpose-built infrastructure rather than upgraded classic line.

  • Families

    Good fit

Short journey, level boarding at the principal stations and toilets on board; luggage space is the usual constraint at busy times.

Also works for 2 more

  • Couples

Comfortable paired seating and a short journey, though this is transport rather than an occasion in itself.

  • Older travellers

Step-free access at the principal stations and a seated, reserved journey with no changes.

Think twice if

  • Less suitable for slow travellers

The point of this route is speed; travellers looking for a long, unhurried journey will find it over quickly.

  • You cannot just turn up

A reservation is required for this journey.
