Tohoku Shinkansen: Tokyo to Shin-Aomori

The Tohoku Shinkansen runs from Tokyo to Shin-Aomori, the longest line JR East operates, using E5, E6, E8 and E2 series trains. Hayabusa is the fastest service; Hayate, Yamabiko and Nasuno make more stops, and Komachi trains split off for Akita. Beyond Shin-Aomori the Hokkaido Shinkansen continues under the Tsugaru Strait.

Why this connection

Why this route matters

This is the line that takes you out of the Tokyo megalopolis and into northern Japan in one sitting. The country changes as you go: dense suburbs give way to the rice plains around Sendai, then to the wooded hills and long winters of Tohoku, a region most visitors never reach. Sendai and Morioka both sit on the route, and at Shin-Aomori the network keeps going under the sea to Hokkaido, so the journey can be the first leg of something much longer.

The train in service

What the speed feels like aboard

Only confirmed onboard details and photographs tied to this service appear here. Unrecorded facilities remain unknown.

Speed is the defining quality here: distances that read as long on paper collapse into a short, businesslike ride. At a few hours between Tokyo and Aomori, it is long enough to feel like a journey and short enough to watch the whole of it without losing concentration. The middle of the route, through Omiya Station and Sendai Station, is where the journey stops feeling like a departure and starts feeling like a place of its own.

    Especially good

A working high-speed railway running at its designed speed on purpose-built infrastructure rather than upgraded classic line.
