Hokkaido Shinkansen: Shin-Aomori to Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto

The Hokkaido Shinkansen carries Hayabusa services from Shin-Aomori under the Tsugaru Strait to Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto, the current northern end of Japan's high-speed network. The crossing uses the Seikan Tunnel, the undersea rail tunnel that has linked the two islands since 1988.

Why this connection

Why this route matters

This is the only way to reach Hokkaido by high-speed train, and the crossing itself is the point: around 54 kilometres of tunnel, much of it beneath the Tsugaru Strait, on a section shared with freight. There is nothing to see for most of the passage, which is oddly the appeal; a quiet twenty minutes under the sea between two very different parts of Japan. An extension towards Sapporo is under construction, so the line as it stands is a stage rather than a finished network.
