The 285 series carriages offer private compartments in several grades plus a carpeted open-berth option, and the crossing of the Great Seto Bridge to Shikoku happens in early morning light.

Because the run continues overnight, the experience splits in two: the settling-in of the first evening, and whatever the light reveals when the blinds go up. The long run between Tokyo and Takamatsu gives the scenery time to shift gradually, and the day settles into its own rhythm of stops and open stretches. The middle of the route, through Okayama Station, is where the journey stops feeling like a departure and starts feeling like a place of its own.

The Tohoku Shinkansen runs from Tokyo to Shin-Aomori, the longest line JR East operates, using E5, E6, E8 and E2 series trains. Hayabusa is the fastest service; Hayate, Yamabiko and Nasuno make more stops, and Komachi trains split off for Akita. Beyond Shin-Aomori the Hokkaido Shinkansen continues under the Tsugaru Strait.

The Hokuriku Shinkansen runs from Tokyo across the mountains of central Honshu to the Sea of Japan coast, reaching Tsuruga since the 2024 extension beyond Kanazawa. Kagayaki is the fastest service, with Hakutaka, Asama and the Kanazawa–Tsuruga Tsurugi shuttle filling in the stops.
