This is a preserved railway run for its own sake, so the journey deliberately feels older and slower than modern rail. It is a short hop between St. Wolfgang im Salzkammergut and Schafbergspitze (about 6 km), so the interest is concentrated rather than spread out, there is little dead time either side of the best stretches. Passing Schafbergalm station gives the journey its midpoint, and the character either side of it is noticeably different. There are few intermediate calls, so the run feels continuous once it is underway.
