The Ofoten Line climbs from the ice-free harbour at Narvik in Norway over the border at Riksgränsen (the highest station on the route) and runs past Abisko and the Torneträsk lake to Kiruna in Swedish Lapland. It was built at the end of the nineteenth century to carry iron ore to the sea and still does, alongside the SJ and Vy passenger trains that form part of the long Narvik–Luleå–Stockholm service.

Why this route
Inside three hours the train crosses from Norwegian fjord to Arctic tundra: out of Narvik along the Ofotfjord on a ledge above the water, up through snow sheds to the bare plateau at Riksgränsen, then along the shore of Torneträsk with Lapporten, the U-shaped glacial notch, framed ahead. Abisko is the stop for the national park and some of the most reliable northern lights viewing anywhere. Note that the infrastructure manager schedules occasional engineering closures on the Narvik–Bjørnfjell section.
