Haerang is a sleeper cruise train converted from Mugunghwa-ho carriages into suites, deluxe and family compartments with dining cars, operated by Korail Tourism Development. Its Grand Tour of Korea runs three days and two nights from Seoul via Suncheon, Busan, Gyeongju, Jeongdongjin and Donghae before returning to Seoul, with shorter two-day regional tours on alternate Saturdays. Departures are on fixed days and the product is sold as an all-inclusive package.

The occasion
Nothing else in Korea offers overnight rail accommodation: the KTX network is built for speed, and Haerang is deliberately built for dwelling, with compartments, formal dining and scheduled off-train excursions at each stop. The itinerary threads the historic capital at Gyeongju and the east-coast sunrise station at Jeongdongjin into a single loop. Korail has announced replacement rolling stock from 2029, so the current converted carriages are a finite proposition.

The V-Train is a Korail sightseeing service that runs the 27.7 kilometre stretch of the Yeongdong Line between the former coal town of Cheoram and the hamlet of Buncheon, through the Nakdong River gorge in the Baekdudaegan range. Korail runs it at an average of around thirty kilometres an hour in retro-styled carriages with large windows and open-air sections at the car ends. It calls at Seungbu, one of the least road-accessible stations in the country.

Korail's KTX runs the Gyeongbu high-speed line from Seoul to Busan by way of Daejeon and Dongdaegu, connecting the capital with the country's main port city. Tickets are issued against a specific train and seat, and Korail's own Korail Pass covers KTX travel.

The Gyeonggang line KTX leaves Seoul and Cheongnyangni and runs east through the Taebaek mountains to Gangneung on the East Sea coast, calling at Pyeongchang and Jinbu on the way. It opened in December 2017 for the PyeongChang Winter Olympics and turned what had been a long mountain drive into a trip of under two hours, making the ski resorts and the coast an easy day out from the capital.
