Seven Stars in Kyushu

Seven Stars invented the modern Japanese cruise train and still sets its terms. Fourteen suites across seven cars, maroon paint over a cabinetmaker's interior of kumiko screens, lacquer and local timber, a lounge car with a piano and a dining car where Kyushu producers get named on the menu. The itineraries are a loop of an island small enough to circle properly: three-night courses have gone by way of Yufuin, Unzen, Takachiho and Kirishima, while the one-night course runs south towards Kagoshima and back. Everything starts and ends at Hakata, with a dedicated lounge before departure. This is a booking commitment rather than a ticket: courses are released in blocks, most sell out, and applications go through JR Kyushu's cruise train tour desk by phone.
