Nishi Kyushu Shinkansen: Takeo-Onsen to Nagasaki

The Nishi Kyushu Shinkansen is Japan's newest and shortest high-speed line, running Kamome services between Takeo-Onsen and Nagasaki in about 23 minutes. It opened in September 2022 and is not yet physically connected to the rest of the Shinkansen network, so journeys from Hakata involve a timed change at Takeo-Onsen.

Why this connection

Why this route matters

It is a curiosity as much as a railway: a 66-kilometre high-speed line that does not touch the rest of the network, built ahead of a connection that has not been agreed. Travelling it is a quick way to understand how Japanese rail projects are staged over decades. The N700S Kamome trainsets are among the most carefully finished on the island, and Nagasaki's rebuilt terminus is worth the arrival.

The train in service

What the speed feels like aboard

Only confirmed onboard details and photographs tied to this service appear here. Unrecorded facilities remain unknown.

It is a modern high-speed service, which makes the journey feel less like an expedition and more like the country being handed to you in fast-forward. It is a short hop between Takeo and Nagasaki, so the interest is concentrated rather than spread out, there is little dead time either side of the best stretches. Calls at Ureshino-Onsen Station and Shin-Omura Station break the run into recognisable stages rather than one undifferentiated stretch.
