Why this route
Dali sits between Erhai lake and the Cangshan range and is the natural first stop on any Yunnan trip. The railway there is not high-speed and it is honest to say so; it is a fast conventional line, cheap, frequent and easy to book, running through farmland and hill country at an altitude of around 2,000 metres. It is the practical alternative to the mountain road, and the onward line towards Lijiang and Shangri-La starts here.

Trains 5633 and 5634 take about nine and a quarter hours to cover 376 kilometres between Puxiong and Panzhihua South on the old Chengdu–Kunming railway, stopping at twenty-five small stations on the way. China Railway keeps the service running as a subsidised welfare slow train for the Yi communities of the Daliang mountains, and the hard-seat fare has been held at a few yuan for decades.
