Scenic
Why this route
Dali sits between Erhai lake and the Cangshan range and is the natural first stop on any Yunnan trip.
From the train
The railway there is not high-speed and it is honest to say so; it is a fast conventional line, cheap, frequent and easy to book, running through farmland and hill country at an altitude of around 2,000 metres.
Across the map
It is the practical alternative to the mountain road, and the onward line towards Lijiang and Shangri-La starts here.
From Kunming the line runs west across the plateau through Chuxiong to Dali, on the northern shore of Erhai lake.

It is a daylight run chosen for the landscape, which means the best use of the time is simply to keep looking out. It is a short hop between Kunming and Dali, so the interest is concentrated rather than spread out, there is little dead time either side of the best stretches. Passing Chuxiong Railway Station gives the journey its midpoint, and the character either side of it is noticeably different. With only a handful of calls, the journey holds its momentum from end to end.
