Why this connection
This is the most scenic of the trunk high-speed routes: the line runs through the limestone towers that make Guilin and Yangshuo famous, and through the terraced hills of Guizhou before them. It also connects two places with very little in common (a mountain province still largely rural, and the manufacturing delta around Guangzhou) in about four hours, which is a fair summary of what high-speed rail has done to China.

This is a fast intercity run, so the pleasure is in how quickly the map changes rather than in lingering over any one view. At a few hours between Guiyang and Guangzhou (about 857 km), it is long enough to feel like a journey and short enough to watch the whole of it without losing concentration. The middle of the route, through Guilin West Railway Station, is where the journey stops feeling like a departure and starts feeling like a place of its own. With only a handful of calls, the journey holds its momentum from end to end.

The Chengdu–Kunming high-speed corridor runs south-west from the Sichuan basin through the mountains of Liangshan to Kunming in Yunnan, calling at Xichang. It parallels the original Chengdu–Kunming railway, one of the hardest lines ever built in China.

The Chengdu–Chongqing high-speed railway runs 308 km across the Sichuan basin, with 11 stations including Ziyang North, Neijiang North and Yongchuan East. A speed increase to 350 km/h in December 2020 brought the two cities within about an hour of each other, with services running from Chengdu East to Chongqing Shapingba.
