The Shimakaze is Kintetsu's 50000 series premium limited express, running from Osaka Namba to Kashikojima on the Ise-Shima coast in about two and a half hours. Every seat is a wide reclining seat, with double-deck observation saloons at each end and a two-storey cafe car in the middle.

The occasion

Why take this journey

Kintetsu is a private railway that competes with JR by being better rather than faster, and the Shimakaze is the clearest statement of that. It runs to Ise (home of Japan's most important Shinto shrine) and on to the pearl-farming bays of Ago. There are salon compartments for groups, a cafe car serving Matsusaka beef curry, and a surcharge on top of the limited express fare that is small for what it is.

On board

This sits at the slow, deliberate end of rail travel, where the timetable is built around the experience rather than the other way round. At a few hours between Osaka and Shima, it is long enough to feel like a journey and short enough to watch the whole of it without losing concentration. Passing Ise-shi Station gives the journey its midpoint, and the character either side of it is noticeably different.
