Blue Symphony is Kintetsu's three-car sightseeing limited express from Osaka-Abenobashi to Yoshino, rebuilt from 6200-series commuter stock into a deep blue train with a lounge car, a library and twin seats. Kintetsu runs two round trips a day, four services in total, with the first leaving Osaka-Abenobashi at 10:10 and reaching Yoshino at 11:28.

Why this experience
Yoshino is the mountain Japan goes to for cherry blossom, thirty thousand trees up a single hillside, and Blue Symphony is the proper way to arrive. The middle car is given over entirely to a lounge with a bar counter and a small library rather than seats, which is an unusual amount of space to surrender on a 78-minute run. The route climbs steadily out of the Osaka plain through Kashiharajingū-mae, past Asuka with its burial mounds and stone figures, then narrows into the Yoshino river valley for the last stretch. It is affordable in a way the cruise trains are not: the special-car charge is a few hundred yen on top of the ordinary fare and the limited-express charge. Only four services run each day and the train does not operate on Wednesdays, so plan around the published pattern rather than turning up.
