Two kinds of Indian rail journey are published here: the private palace-on-rails itineraries, and the mountain railways that have climbed the same gradients since the colonial era.

The palace trains are sold as multi-day tours with fixed departures and inclusive pricing. The hill railways are ordinary public services on narrow gauge, bought as a ticket for a few hours of very slow, very steep railway. Confusing the two is the most common planning mistake in this part of the catalogue.

Three of the hill lines below are UNESCO-listed as the Mountain Railways of India; each page records the operator's own published route and season, and leaves fares blank where none is published.
