The Matheran Hill Railway climbs roughly twenty kilometres of two-foot narrow gauge from Neral, on the Mumbai–Pune main line, to Matheran, a Western Ghats hill station where motor vehicles are not allowed. The ascent takes about two hours through Jummapatti, Waterpipe and Aman Lodge. Central Railway suspends the line each monsoon because of landslide risk, typically from June until early November.

This is a preserved railway run for its own sake, so the journey deliberately feels older and slower than modern rail. At a few hours between Neral and Matheran, it is long enough to feel like a journey and short enough to watch the whole of it without losing concentration. The middle of the route, through Jummapatti and Waterpipe, is where the journey stops feeling like a departure and starts feeling like a place of its own.
