Why this connection
Beyond Fukushima the train stops behaving like a shinkansen: it slows to conventional speed, crosses the Itaya pass in a series of snow sheds and tunnels, and runs through small towns with level crossings, which is not something you see from any other shinkansen window.
In motion
Yonezawa is known for its beef, Yamagata for hot springs and the temple steps at Yamadera, and in winter the whole route is deep in snow.

The Tsubasa was Japan's first mini-shinkansen when it opened in 1992, running shinkansen trainsets onto a gauge-converted conventional line beyond Fukushima and reaching Shinjo after a 1999 extension. Trains leave Tokyo coupled to a Tohoku Shinkansen service, divide at Fukushima, and then climb over the Ou main line through Yonezawa to Yamagata and Shinjo. The current E8 series sets entered service on the route recently.

The Komachi runs from Tokyo to Akita as a mini-shinkansen: coupled to a Hayabusa on the Tohoku Shinkansen as far as Morioka, then continuing alone over gauge-converted conventional track through Tazawako and Kakunodate to Akita on the Sea of Japan coast. The run takes around three and a half hours, and the red E6 series sets are among the most distinctive trains on the JR East network.
