The Rasender Roland is a 750 millimetre narrow-gauge steam railway on the Baltic island of Rügen, running since 1895 between Lauterbach Mole, Putbus, Binz, Sellin, Baabe and Göhren. Operated since 2008 by Pressnitztalbahn as part of local public transport, it covers roughly 27 kilometres end to end in about 75 minutes, with a main season timetable from May to early November and a reduced winter service.

This is licensed public transport rather than a museum operation, so you travel with islanders and holidaymakers as well as enthusiasts, behind steam every day of the year. At around thirty kilometres an hour it is a genuinely useful way to link Binz, Sellin, Baabe and Göhren in an afternoon, getting off for the beach or the Jagdschloss and picking up the next train. Fares are zonal, so short hops are cheap.

The Fichtelbergbahn is a 750 millimetre narrow-gauge steam railway in the Saxon Ore Mountains, climbing 17.35 kilometres from Cranzahl to Kurort Oberwiesenthal, the highest town in Germany, in about an hour. Operated by Sächsische Dampfeisenbahngesellschaft, it runs to a regular daily timetable through the year apart from scheduled maintenance closures, and crosses the Hüttenbachtal viaduct near the upper terminus.
