The Fichtelbergbahn is a 750 millimetre narrow-gauge steam railway in the Saxon Ore Mountains, climbing 17.35 kilometres from Cranzahl to Kurort Oberwiesenthal, the highest town in Germany, in about an hour. Operated by Sächsische Dampfeisenbahngesellschaft, it runs to a regular daily timetable through the year apart from scheduled maintenance closures, and crosses the Hüttenbachtal viaduct near the upper terminus.

From the record
This line still does the job it was built for in 1897, hauling passengers up into the Erzgebirge behind steam every day rather than on summer weekends only. The climb past Neudorf and Hammerunterwiesenthal and over the Hüttenbachtal viaduct packs a lot of narrow-gauge character into an hour, and it connects at Cranzahl with the main-line service from Chemnitz, so it works as a day out without a car.

The ICE Sprinter joins Berlin Hauptbahnhof and München Hauptbahnhof with only a handful of stops, using the new-build line through the Thuringian Forest that opened in December 2017.
