Pingxi Line: Ruifang to Jingtong
The Pingxi Line is a 27 kilometre branch railway east of Taipei, built in 1929 to move coal and now worked as a scheduled local service between Ruifang, Sandiaoling, Shifen and the terminus at Jingtong. Trains climb the Keelung River gorge on single track, with the rails at Shifen running directly through the middle of the old street. Taiwan Railway sells a day pass covering the branch, so you can get on and off between towns.

Why this railway matters
This is one of the rare branch lines where the railway is still physically embedded in the town it serves, close enough to shopfronts that the train's horn interrupts the market. The day-pass structure turns it into a walking-and-riding itinerary rather than a single trip, with waterfalls near Shifen and the preserved coal-loading structures at Jingtong. It is a deliberately slow counterpoint to Taiwan's high-speed spine, and because it is a normal timetabled service, no advance booking is required.

Breezy Blue: Fangliao to Taitung on the South-Link Line
Breezy Blue is a Taiwan Railway tourist service using restored blue ordinary-class carriages with ceiling fans, manual doors and windows that open, running the South-Link Line between Fangliao and Taitung. Taiwan Railway describes the route as a 98.2 kilometre arc with more than one hundred bridges and over thirty tunnels, and the published timetable shows a journey of a little over three hours each way. It is sold as a booked tourist product rather than as an ordinary point-to-point ticket.

Jiji Line: Ershui to Checheng
The Jiji Line runs 29.7 kilometres from Ershui on the western trunk line into the hills of Nantou County, calling at Jiji and Shuili before ending at the former logging town of Checheng. Built in the 1910s and 1920s to serve hydroelectric construction and later the timber trade, the line lost its upper section to landslide damage and reopened in full on 25 June 2026 after a multi-year reconstruction of tunnels, slopes and drainage. It is worked as an ordinary local service.

Taiwan High Speed Rail: Taipei to Zuoying
Taiwan High Speed Rail runs 350 km down the island's western plain from Taipei to Zuoying in Kaohsiung, calling at Taoyuan, Hsinchu, Taichung, Chiayi and Tainan among its twelve stations. Unusually for a high-speed system, THSRC sells unreserved tickets valid for all trains as well as reserved seats.
