Breezy Blue: Fangliao to Taitung on the South-Link Line

Breezy Blue is a Taiwan Railway tourist service using restored blue ordinary-class carriages with ceiling fans, manual doors and windows that open, running the South-Link Line between Fangliao and Taitung. Taiwan Railway describes the route as a 98.2 kilometre arc with more than one hundred bridges and over thirty tunnels, and the published timetable shows a journey of a little over three hours each way. It is sold as a booked tourist product rather than as an ordinary point-to-point ticket.

From the record

Why this railway matters

This is the Taiwanese train ride that existed before air conditioning, preserved rather than reconstructed, and the open windows are the point: sea air, tunnel noise and the smell of the coast come straight into the carriage. The South-Link is the one main-line section where both the Taiwan Strait and the Pacific are in view on the same run, and the train dwells at small stations such as Jinlun so passengers can step down. Book ahead through the operating travel partner, as seats are limited and the service does not run every day.
