The Mount Washington Cog Railway climbs three miles from Marshfield Base Station in Bretton Woods to the 6,288-foot summit of Mount Washington, the highest peak in the northeastern United States. It opened fully in July 1869 as the first mountain rack railway in the world, using the Marsh rack system, and the round trip takes about three hours including time at the top.

Nothing else in the world has been doing this for as long. The train pushes its carriage up gradients that reach roughly one in three at Jacob's Ladder, a trestle where the front of the coach is far above the back, and the summit has some of the worst recorded weather on earth; it can be sunny at the base and near freezing with a gale at the top on the same morning. Biodiesel locomotives handle most departures, with a steam engine on selected trains. Take a jacket regardless of the forecast.
