Why this route

A landscape that arrives in route order.

Few trains change scenery as decisively over so short a distance. The Azusa leaves one of the busiest stations on earth, works out along the Chuo Line through Hachioji, then climbs into the Kofu basin with Mount Fuji visible on clear days before running up the valley towards the mountains at Matsumoto. It is an ordinary reserved-seat limited express doing the job of a scenic railway, which makes it easy to fit into a wider trip.

On board

The route does most of the work here, it is a journey taken for what passes the window rather than for the destination. At a few hours between Tokyo and Matsumoto, it is long enough to feel like a journey and short enough to watch the whole of it without losing concentration. Calls at Kofu Station break the run into recognisable stages rather than one undifferentiated stretch.
