The Kyushu Shinkansen runs the length of the island from Hakata in Fukuoka to Kagoshima-Chuo, calling at Kumamoto on the way. Mizuho services cover the whole line in about 1 hour 19 minutes, which is why the train has largely replaced flying between the two ends of Kyushu.

Kyushu is compact enough that a high-speed line changes how the island is travelled: breakfast in Fukuoka, an afternoon under the volcano at Kagoshima, and back the same day if you want.
