Beijing S2: the Great Wall train to Badaling
Beijing Suburban Railway line S2 runs out to Badaling and on towards Yanqing and Shacheng, giving direct rail access to the best-known stretch of the Great Wall. Since October 2025 the urban terminus has been Nankou rather than Huangtudian, after the previous city end was closed for construction work, and the line runs a small number of departures each day, with more at weekends and holidays.

Why this railway matters
This is the cheap, everyday way Beijingers get to the Wall, and it is far better than the coach: the line follows the old Beijing–Zhangjiakou alignment engineered by Zhan Tianyou, climbing through the Jundu mountains on switchbacks with the Wall visible on the ridges above. In spring the valley below Juyongguan fills with apricot and peach blossom and the train slows for it. Seats are numbered and services are infrequent, so plan around the timetable rather than turning up; and check the current city-end terminus before you set out.
