Why this connection
The Madrid–Levante line is one of the clearest demonstrations of what Spanish high speed did to the map: the capital to the Mediterranean in well under two hours, on a purpose-built alignment that strikes east across the Meseta, threads the Cuenca uplands and drops down the Requena escarpment into the Valencian huerta. It is worth taking for the transition alone, from Castilian dry plateau to orange groves in one sitting. The trains are Renfe class 112 Talgo 350 sets, the duck-nosed ones, plus Avlo on the low-cost slots. Cuenca-Fernando Zóbel is a genuinely useful intermediate stop for the hanging houses and the Serranía. Renfe's own route pages give the station times and first departures; they do not publish a single headline frequency or journey time, so check live times when you book rather than relying on a quoted figure.

The Madrid–Seville AVE was Spain's first high-speed line, opened for the 1992 Expo, and it still runs from Madrid Puerta de Atocha to Sevilla Santa Justa in about two and a half hours, with calls at Ciudad Real, Puertollano and Córdoba. Every seat is reserved. Renfe now runs its low-cost Avlo service on the same infrastructure alongside the full-service AVE.
