This is a preserved railway run for its own sake, so the journey deliberately feels older and slower than modern rail. At a few hours out of and back to Skagway (about 64 km), it is long enough to feel like a journey and short enough to watch the whole of it without losing concentration. The middle of the route, through White Pass Summit, is where the journey stops feeling like a departure and starts feeling like a place of its own. Because the route runs across more than one country, the surroundings, and the feel of the train's stops, shift noticeably along the way.
