Why this experience
Nikko's shrines and the Kegon Falls are a standard day trip from Tokyo, and Tobu built this train to make the getting there part of it. The interior is unusually varied for a Japanese limited express (booth seating, a private cockpit suite at the front, and a bar serving local beer) and the departure from Asakusa puts you in old Tokyo rather than a Shinkansen concourse. Seats are sold by accommodation type and the premium ones go early.

It runs as ordinary transport, and that is the interest, the train is shared with people using it to get somewhere. It is a short hop between Tokyo and Nikko, so the interest is concentrated rather than spread out, there is little dead time either side of the best stretches. There are few intermediate calls, so the run feels continuous once it is underway.
